This was game seven of the Penguins first round series against the Washington Capitals. Mario Lemieux sat out this entire season.

After four games, the Caps had a 3-1 series lead and it looked like they would eliminate the Penguins. Pittsburgh won game five 6-5 in overtime thanks to a Luc Robitaille goal to avoid elimination. The Pens then crushed the Capitals 7-1 in Washington to bring the series back to Pittsburgh for game seven. Robitaille and Tomas Sandstrom each had four points in game six.

In game seven Ken Wregget made 33 saves to shut out the Capitals and the Penguins won the game 3-0 and moved on to the second round.

The Pens were eliminated by the New Jersey Devils in five games in round two.
