RECAP: Top Guns. PENS WIN.

There's a name for this kind of performance.  It's called a Corvo Game.

The Penguins probably played their worst game in like three weeks, and they put up 8 goals. Things went from looking like a Atlantic Division hangover to a 8-4 drubbing of the Winnipeg Jets. Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, and Sidney Crosby combined for 13 points.

The power play looked downright terrifying.  Tyler Kennedy scored 2 goals.  He didn't miss it.  The fact that even Pens fans don't know who's gonna provide the offense on any given night is scary.  Between the pipes, Teese did what he does.  We'd still take a healthy Beej over a healthy Teese come playoff time.  Then again, if the Pens are without MAF for an extended amount of time in the playoffs, it won't really matter anyway.

The Rangers will be battling Red Wings Wednesday night on NBCSN, now holding a 1-point lead over the Pens for the division and number-one seed.

Yeah, whoops.  We messed up the number yesterday.
A Buffalo loss tonight, and the Pens clinch.  We promise.

Cap after the jump.

Tyler Kennedy kicked off the scoring by putting a shot on net.  It
went in.  1-0.

About a minute later, the Jets tied it up with a redirection off a
 skate.  1-1.
Slater put it past Thiessen.  Very fitting.

Pens jumped on the PP when Byfuglien got the stick up on Crosby.  That power play ran its course, and Malkin went off for a high stick. Staal hit the post on the PK.

Then Brian Little scores a PP goal. 2-1.

And they had 2 more minutes on the PP.  Pens killed it off.
Teese had to make a couple saves.

Play turned around, and Malkin drew a penalty.  That powerplay was FILTHY.  Neal buries one after Crosby and Malkin work magic. 2-2.

As Mike Lange pointed out, the second period felt like the longest period of the season. Things started out great and then ended even better.

James Neal made it 3-2, with Malkin lurking again. The lead was short-lived as Chad Little tied it up 3-3.

Then Crosby worked his ass off and basically scored a goal for TK. 4-3.

Neal drew a penalty, and the Pens had the extra attacker, with Sid quarterbacking everything on the point.  He hit the Letang with a pass in stride that we refuse to watch again because it's still so perfect in our heads.  The puck gets to Malkin, and he takes a slapper. Goal. 5-3.

The MVP chants rained down in CEC. What a feeling. At some point Pavelec scurried down the runway like a little baby.

Jets scored.  5-4.  17 people cared.

35-goal season.  And it's not over yet.

Malkin scored some bullshit goal to make it 7-4, then the Pens ran out the clock.

Dupuis was being a dick and scored to make it 8-4.

Interesting moment at the end of the game with the Pens on the power play.   With Malkin in a scoring race and TK looking for a hat-trick goal, those two saw PP time in the waning moments with Arron Asham/Eric Tangradi thrown in the mix to remind everyone watching what Bylsma was up to.  It was Operation Set Up Kennedy, but it wasn't happening.

Game.

MISCELLANEOUS
  • Crosby's numbers in 12 games thus far this season would have him on pace for 144 points over 82 games.
  • Crosby's numbers in his recent comeback have him on pace to score 31 points in these 14 games.
  • Crosby's numbers really aren't that important.
  • Malkin had 5 points.  Get real.
  • Malkin has had 10 points against the Jets in two games.
  • Crosby made a back-hand pass from one blue line to another. Maybe the best pass we've ever seen.
  • man.
