The 5-2 final score is one of the more misleading final scores in awhile. At no point during the game were the Pens even close to out of it.
Every time the Pens had a chance to take a two goal lead they couldn't. They left the Flyers hanging around plain and simple, and you just can't do that.
At this point it is stupid to even mention it, but we have to because we're fan boys. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in a game like this makes all the difference. The Pens needed that big goal that big time players produce in games like this.
It didn't happen. Oh well.
Even if winning the division seems out of reach, clinching home-ice is not. Huge game in Tampa city on Thursday.
thanks to Ellen.
Playoff feel to open the game. The Pens came out flying.
Yes, the Pens miss Crosby. But the Flyers really miss Chris Pronger. Their defense is a mess without him. Pens had unlimited two-on-ones, and odd man breaks all game.
One of those two-on-ones resulted in Kovy scoring a big goal. He made Bobjoksy look like a fool.
Usually when Kovy gets that first one, another one is right around the corner.
But the Pens struggled to get onto Kovalev's level early. Test-tube was a little rusty in his first game back.
Not jobbing Test Tube at all. He was really good in the faceoff circle:
Test Tube was 12 for 17 on faceoffs.
The Pens got themselves into penalty trouble all night. After nearly breaking the game open, they got called for one.
The Flyers cashed in on a lucky bounce off the post, off MAF's pads. 1-1.
It wasn't officially a powerplay goal, but it came as it expired.
Things picked up after the goal. Orpik was jobbing people.
This seems weird to say but the entire game was turned in a five-minute span in the second period. Tyler Kennedy made an unreal play to score his 19th goal of the season, and give the Pens a 2-1 lead.
Like eight seconds later TK had another chance. He toe-dragged some dude, had Bobrossy leaning. And he couldn't shoot. With Bobrossy out of it, the puck went to Kunitz. Open net city. Richards made his one appearance of the night to get a stick on it. Shit.
Two minutes or so later Paul Martin got called for a penalty that FSN didn't even show. But according to Paul Steigerwald even Ray Shero was pissed about it. The Flyers cashed in right away. Hartnell with a power move.
46 seconds later Giroux with just a nasty goal.
Had MAF going to the right, buried it on a frozen rope to the low left. Just nasty. 3-2.
Going into the third, terrible stat loomed. Pens have not won a game when trailing going to into the third all season.
This game never felt out of reach at any point. James Neal had a chance to bury one, but shot it right into Bobrossy. Bobrossy held the fort.
Than Leino ended it.
Two goals in the third, 5-2.
Pens had a big time powerplay with still over ten minutes left in the game. Nothing. Peace.
this about sums it up. thanks to NG for that. jesus.
