Gameday 70 – Devils

Pittsburgh Penguins (43-21-5) @ New Jersey Devils (41-25-5)

1:00 pm/et

Prudential Center – Newark, New Jersey

Games against the Devils and especially games in New Jersey have not been kind to the Penguins.  Despite the 10-game winning streak, the Devils are only four points behind Pittsburgh. They have played one more game though.

The Devils are going to wear their retro green and red uniforms for St. Patrick's Day again. They first did this on St. Patrick's Day 2010 and they beat the Pens 5-2.

Season Series: 1-3-0

Last meeting that counted: February 5, 2012. Penguins lost 5-2.

What we said in our recap:

Kovalchukdid whatever he wanted to do. Pens looked tired. Apparently TK got hurt.

Know Your Enemy: Running With The Devils

What they're saying:

The Devils have been good but the Penguins have been GREAT. I don’t hesitate to tell you that I honestly believe that if you are an Eastern Conference team and want to appear in the Cup finals, you will HAVE to beat Pittsburgh in order to get there. That’s not saying that Pittsburgh is the team that will get to the finals, although I have them there at the moment, I am just saying I believe them to be the strongest team in the East. If I had to call it right now, I would say we will be seeing a rematch of the 2008 and 2009 Cup Finals.

Know the Enemy:

"But this is Pittsburgh we are playing tonight and it doesn't matter that we are going old school tonight or that we are 5-0 against them this season. The Penguins could care less what NJ is doing and are going out there to win. The lead the Devils by 2 points in a tight race for the division."

Two huge games in a row.
Devils tonight and Bruins tomorrow night.
Until the playoffs start, it's going to be tough to find a couple of game that have more potential to impact rest of the Penguins' season.
The Pens have a two point lead over the Devils in the Atlantic division.
They also have a game in hand.
A win today would be huge for either team.
The Devils have absolutely owned the Penguins this season.
They're 5-0 and could sweep the season series tonight.
During the 2009 playoffs the Pittsburgh Penguins proved that they could perform at their best when it mattered the most.
Tonight they will need to do the same.

For the Penguins:
Evgeni Malkin will not play.
He bruised his foot on Sunday against the Lightning.
For the Devils:
Paul Martin will return to the line-up.
He last played on October 24th, 2009.
In that game he was hit in the forearm by a Bill Guerin slapshot and required surgery.

The Devils will wear retro green and red jerseys tonight to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
Brodeur will even wear a retro mask.
We feel like we should do our part to celebrate the red and green Devils as well:

The Stanley Cup will be on display prior to tonight's WBS Penguins game.

"Right now they have that confidence against us," Guerin said of the Devils. "They've played really well against us. Marty (Brodeur) has played good against us. I don't know. It's one of those things. I don't think anything's been given to them. I think we've played some strong games against them.

"You go, we go."

Do it.

Go Pens.
