Gameday 61 – Capitals

7:30 pm
CONSOL Energy Center
TV: Versus/TSN2
Back-to-back games for both the Pens and the Caps. Washington is five points behind Pittsburgh for fourth place in the Eastern Conference, and home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Caps wons 2-1 in Buffalo yesterday. They're 4-5-1 in their last ten. Ovechkin is five points behind Crosby in scoring. He's played 60 games to Crosby's 41.
It's always big when the Caps and Pens play, regardless of who is in the line-up. It's even bigger when playoff positioning is on the line. There's no doubt that this is going to be a tough one.

Capitals' rookie centers Marcus Johansson and Mathieu Perreault have had to endure a lot of talk in the past few weeks about the Capitals' need for an experienced #2 center. They have silenced those voices for one day, at least, as they provided all the offense in a 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Hockey Day in America.

Season series: 2-1 Capitals
Last meeting: February 6th, 2011 – Capitals Won 3-0
What we said in our recap:

After of a weekend of awful lows and terrible news, there's not much to say. Pens are in a weird position. They have given themselves enough cushion to survive the next month, and the next month could be painful. Without Crosby and Malkin, the Pens are, at best, an average team. Yes, they did just win five in row, but you're only as good as your last game. And against the Caps, the Pens looked shitty.

Penguins notes: news on Staal's potential injury yet.  He's expected to play tonight though. Martin is questionable.  No idea who will be on D if he can't play.  Brian Strait has been called up. Kunitz took part in the morning skate, but he won't play tonight. sure if Marc-Andre Fleury or Brent Johnson will be starting. PG says that the Pens are still looking at Kovalev despite already making a trade today.
Capitals notes:
After being hit by a Brooks Orpik shot during the last Pens/Caps game Mike Green is still injured.

Do It.
Go Pens.

We're not going to insult everyone by saying, " if you don't know how big this game is, you're a joke" because that is so 2007.
If you're on board now, then it is just implied you know whats up.
This game could suck for a lot of reasons, other than the fact it is on NBC.
  1. The Pens are coming off an emotional/physical battle.
  2. The Caps are coming off a humilating loss to the Avalanche on Friday night.
But if history has taught us anything, when the Pens have needed a big win in Washington, they have gotten it.
With IHCDB having the Pens play this run and shoot hockey, the final score of the game could be 13-12.
The Pens are playing so fast they can't even be seen in pics, as shown below thanks to reader Ryan, who saw the Pens in the Union train station late Saturday night.
A quick look at where the Pens stand as of right now after the jump.
At times like these, the huge NHL presence on the internet on the Internet if your BFF.
Florida somehow shutout the Bruins last night. Dicks.
The Rangers are in full collaspe mode.
The biggest story right now though, Ryan Miller of the Sabres might be done for the year.

To find a silver lining in this current Pens situation, with all the scoreboard watching, you feel so much more in touch with the NHL.
Games today that are huge:
8pm, MSG.
After the Maple Leafs jobbed the Pens, they have lost three in a row.
That is enough to make you hate Toronto right there.
Tom Renney might be in his own personal casket match.
Someone broke the comments in the Flyers recap, if anyone has any ideas on what happen, let us know.
The previous theory on to why this is happening is that people are copying and pasting things that are two large.
Everything was fine as of 4:00am. And there were about 35 comments.  There are about 46 comments now, so something happened in those 11 comments.
Is it a sign of  Jordan Staal hattrick?
