Gameday 55 – Blue Jackets

7:00 pm

Things are certainly different from the last time the Penguins played Columbus.  We're in Pittsburgh for starters.  Sidney Crosby is out.  Instead of riding high on a winning streak, people everywhere are questioning whether the Pens should just pack it in for the season without Crosby and Malkin.  If there was ever a night to start the game with the same energetic "Let's Go Pens" chant that met the team in Columbus, it's tonight.  The Pens will need all the energy and hard work in the world over the next little while to grind out some wins.

With his 4 point night RJ Umberger has moved into 2nd on the Jackets in scoring with 38 points. He is on pace for 58 points which would be a new career high. Jackets out shot, out hit, out blocked and out faceoff'd the Oilers. Taylor Hall has come a long way since early in the season. Kid is certainly the real deal. Both Antoinne Vermette and Umberger with +4 nights. Kris Russell with a couple of helpers — brings him to 12 points in 45 gp. Matt Calvert back down to just 5 minutes in this game — don't understand that one. Not a good night defensively for the Nash line — all three finished with -2s. Jackets need to go 18-9-3 to hit the 95 points it took to make the playoffs last season — big mountain but why not keep trying to climb it right? With the win the Jackets move to 13th in the West — 5 points behind 8th place LA.

Season series: Penguin Lead 1-0.

Last meeting: December 4, 2010 – Penguins Won 7-2.

The crowd here was louder than it is in Pittsburgh and the Pens responded with a dominant game. They're just rolling right now and it doesn't seem like much can stop them. Good teams take advantage of struggling ones, and that's exactly what we saw. Sidney Crosby is playing some of the best hockey of his career, which is scary. Imagine if the Blue Jackets were in the East? An almost instant rivalry.

We miss Sidney Crosby.

Ethan Moreau is still out with a rib injury.
