Commentor Stoosh has been around quite a while.
He even has a shirt in Storeblog.
He's banged out beastly Homer-esque comments with a high level of consistency.
Only fitting to give him the reins.
...............................
For the first time, I officially give you…

Thoughts, Dudes

It’s just too bad there’s nothing to talk about, eh? Oh, wait…
  • I guess I can kick this off with the topic du jour – the Crusade Against Questionable Hits. Unless you’ve spent your last week with Coach Boudreau coming up with 1001 ridiculous reasons why the league might suspend Ovechkin should he randomly choose to board someone like, say, Brian Campbell, it’s become fairly apparent that every hit that’s even remotely borderline is going to be subject to some sort of scrutiny. If it doesn’t happen with the on-ice officials during the games, it’ll be addressed by the announcers calling them or the media dissecting it every possible way after the fact. Just get ready. Don’t say you weren’t warned. It’s probably going to get worse.
  • Keep in mind that we haven’t even gotten to Thursday yet. That, of course, is the day the Pens visit Boston and we’ll likely see new internet trending records for the words “Matt”, “Cooke” and “retribution”.
  • Watching a replay of whatever it was that Steve Downie technically did to Sidney Crosby and it’s still amazing to me that all of Crosby’s knee ligaments – and his tibia and fibula, for that matter – remained intact. Still looks to me like some half-assed attempt at a slewfoot.
  • Equally amazed that Downie still hasn’t been brought up for a hearing either, although I shouldn’t be surprised. No penalty was called but that may have more to do with the fact that no one really saw the incident happen; he and Downie were the only two players on the left half of the ice when Downie locked him up. Three full seconds passed from the time Crosby sent the puck across the ice to the time he was hauled off his feet. Crosby dishes the puck before he crosses center red and then glides the rest of the way to the Tampa zone. Downie engages him at center red and hauls him down about ten feet inside the Tampa zone. In other words, he had plenty of time and space to break away from Crosby. Crosby wasn’t charging into the zone, so there was no reason for Downie to lock him up in the first place.
  • Then again, I’m giving Downie too much credit here. There’s a reason Downie has built up the reputation he has, and expecting him to peel off Crosby in a situation like that is kind of like expecting Eric Lindros to remember to skate with his head up.
  • Not sure whose comments following the Ovechkin hit were dumber – Ovechkin arguing that Campbell just fell into the boards (because falls like that routinely cause broken ribs, broken clavicles and grade 2 concussions), Boudreau again pulling the “Well if it was Crosby…” card, or Milbury calling the hit a hockey play.
  • Speaking of Milbury, am I the only one who can’t wait until that afternoon five or six years from now when he has to do a Bruins-Pens Saturday game for NBC and Philip Samuelsson – son of Ulf – is patrolling the blueline for the Pens?
  • OK, enough of this. There are bigger fish to fry. Mmmmmm,…fish fry.
  • That knock at the door is Boudreau and Leonsis. Shouldn’t have typed “fish fry”. My bad.
  • Glancing at the standings and some of these matchups in the Eastern Conference are playing out nicely for the Pens. If things stay relatively the same, the Pens would get Montreal in the first round. You’d have Philly and Buffalo beating the hell out of each other in that 3-6 matchup. You’d also get New Jersey and Ottawa meeting in the first round in the 4-5 series. Ottawa’s a well-balanced team that could match up very well against the Devils. Tampa is the team I’d love to see slide into that eighth spot. Tampa would present a much tougher matchup for the Caps than would the Bruins, Rangers or Habs. It’s way too early to tell, but this could set up nicely.
  • From the “Fire Mike Yeo” department, the Pens powerplay is up to a 17.3% conversion rate. Even better, the consistency is there. In 13 games played since February started, they’ve scored at least a powerplay goal in nine of them.
  • I never, ever, ever thought I’d say this, but as a DirecTV subscriber, it’s nice to have Versus back in time for the playoffs. I kind of like this arrangement, actually. I like my DirecTV service so I didn’t want to switch. So thanks to their little spat with Versus/Comcast this year, I spent about 75% of the regular season not having to worry about accidentally flipping past asstastic Versus broadcasters making another Monday night Rangers-Flyers game worse than it already was. And now with just a few weeks left before the playoffs, Versus comes back into my life as if to say, “We got you for playoff hockey, OK, Stoosh? We know our broadcasts are Sega Genesis quality, our studio looks like it was built in your basement and Beninati’s voice sounds like he’s gargling with a bucketful of gravel. But the intensity of playoff hockey often overrides the audio torture.” Maybe…just maybe, Versus, we can make this work, you and I.

Just Epic, my man.

Keep 'em comin' Stoosh.

[commit]

Edit: Why don't I add a few thoughts:

1. Totally agree re: questionable hits. This shit has always gone on in the league, and it's only getting more attention now that the NHL's catering to a wider audience. Frankly, I don't think it's such a bad thing--getting some of the dirty play out of the game would probably extend the careers of a number of quality players. Savard, Booth and Campbell are good examples.

2. Don't answer the door. Boudreau and Leonsis have been known to clear out pantries in the time it takes to tie shoelaces.

3. If the Pens can't beat the Devils, it's another 4-seed and a date with Ottawa. That hasn't worked out too badly in the past, has it? The hell with it. Just beat New Jersey and cue up Montreal/Boston.

4. With all the discussion of Ovie/Cooke, the Downie cheapshot--which frankly was a more blantant intent to injure than either--has gotten lost. Mostly because there wasn't an injury associated. But if you're looking at pure, unadulterated, intent to seriously injure a player, Downie's knee-piledrive is disgusting. Someone needs to end his life. I say this honestly: If Ovechkin Ulf-kneed Downie, ending his career, I'd send Ovie a box of chocolates and a Russian whore for the evening.

Tuesdays with Stoosh giving Lost a run for its money in the "Best thing about Tuesday" department.

I'm still hoping for Flyers/Caps in the first round, but given the prospect of Ovechkin and Co. against Michael Leighton, Tampa Bay would probably be a better matchup.

Downie actually was given a penalty...he got 2 minutes for roughing. There's no excuse for him not being suspended. Colin Campbell needs to go.

Agreed. The Bolts have a lot of fire power, and the way the Stamkos and STL are producing, they can put up some big numbers against the caps if they make it. Their defensive prowess is above average, and I think that Tocchet has them level-headed and pointing in the right direction.

Tomorrows game is probably a pretty good indication whose going to end up second in the East. Jersey seems to be clicking again and Kovelchoo is fitting into the system better. Still like the Pens chances, but it's going to be a dogfight come April.

Go Pens.

I remember them ringing him up, but for some reason I think it may have been for what happened after the fact. Not sure. I thought I remembered Steigy and Errey saying it was for the altercation with TK after the whistle blew, but I could be wrong.

Either way, Downie = still a douche.

ummm, Downie got a two minute roughing call.

And I gotta disagree with Docc8 on the whole hit thing. Neither Cooke nor Downie should be suspended because both of their hits were part of a hockey play where they were involved in action and if there was an intent to injure (head or leg) it was an incredible feat of athletic ability to make the necessary adjustments to line those up. Cooke and Downie were trying to check and both appear to me to have not been able to make the proper reaction to not hurt their opponent. Neither tried to hurt, both tried to check. Downie got 2 minutes, Cookie did not...should have though. Ovie's hit was clearly intentional. He extended his arms and set him into the boards. Dirty play period.

Downie, the Banner says all that needs to be said.

Coach Buttpaste and GM McFool, they make excuses for Danger Boy. Instead of getting ao under control, they just encourage him to be more dangerous to other players on the ice, including his own teammates.

Justice would have them doing a San Jose. But then again, I would like to see the Pens elimin8 them, again.

I second your thoughts on Tampa Bay. I was hoping for Carolina to sneak into the 8th spot and take it to the Caps in the first round, but Tampa's last couple of games against them have been impressive.
And we all know it's how you play down the stretch that's important, not a mid-season win streak.

I also agree with the "it's going to get worse before it gets better" sentiment. It happened a few years back with the "in the crease" rule when everything was scrutinized ad nauseam and culminated with the famous NO GOAL Stanley Cup Winner.

My only hope for the low seeds are that the Lightning make a surge and end up at 7. Not because I want to see the Pens play a team that was hot down the stretch, but because I live in Tampa, and I'm selfish.

My hopes aren't too high. They have been losing, even though Stamkos has been pouring them in and St. Louis is playing like it's 2003. Seriously watch a random Bolts game he is ridiculous lately, fast and full of big, creative moves.

Ovechkin "apologizes" www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=314246 for the hit on Campbell. Here's the condensed version:

Sorry you hurt, hope you play soon. Hockey physical, play hard, battle, win game. Players responsible, I no different but I not want hurt Brian and I disappointed with suspension.

The rest is nothing but I, I, I, me, me, me. Sickening.

Just man the fcuk up, say "I'm sorry for the hit, it was wrong" and don't do it again.

#38 I Have Kasparaitis 2010-03-16 14:38
I am rooting for TB (for obvious reasons) to slip into playoffs. Niitty has been playing pretty strong recently against the Caps, the defense isn't the greatest but has improved drastically from last year's disaster (I am curious to see how my fav. rookie Hedman would fare in the playoffs), but the offense needs to get more contributions than from the top 2 lines. The Purcell trade of Halpern was great; Purcell-Lecavalier-Malone line has looked good. Stamkos is currently day-to-day after the hit he took from Cooke in the first, but he's expected to play. Too bad Bugsy isn't coming back for a while, fuck that shit. Stupid upper body and lower body injuries *shakes fist then sobs*

I still think Downie's psycho alarm went off when he saw Stamkos struggle to get up from the Cooke hit, so he went after Sid. Not justifying, just trying to figure out his lack of thought process. Sid is a freaking android, that ends people for at least a season. At least Downie received a fine. EJ Hradek said it yesterday Downie didn't receive a suspension because there wasn't an injury.

Completely agree being a Directv customer, it sucked not having it and it's awesome to have it for playoffs.

Tuesday Fireside Chats with Stoosh ... I like it.

I'm actually surprised Downie was even slapped with a suspension. The NHL has admitted that injuries play a part in discipline, but I think that is the wrong way to go about things. I can point to some clean plays that resulted in guys being carted off on stretchers as well as attempted cheap shots that missed the mark. Discipline should be based solely on the action - whether or not it was a violation of the rules - and not on results. How is what Downie did (or attempted to do) to Sid any less of a violation of the rules than Ovechkin's hit on Campbell? Basing these things on results/consequences/injuries is just bad business.

I don't think it's such a sure thing Ottawa is the #5 seed. They're kinda sucking right now (4-5-1 in last 10), and Philly is only 3 points behind with a game in hand. I can easily see the Flyers ending up #5.

If that's the case, the Pens need to get the #2 seed so the Devils and Flyers can beat the crap out of each other for 7 games for the right to take on the Caps, while the Pens cruise into the ECF with a couple easier series.

Did anyone else think that the most ridiculous comment of yesterday was from Brucey when he said that he felt so bad about telling Ovechkin about the suspension because he knows that all he wants to do is play hard? That's what I would tell my PeeWee son when he gets a little too carried away on his first day of checking. Is Ovechkin a 10 year old or an adult? Doesn't he wear some C on his shirt? And Bruce is afraid to tell him about the suspension, much less set him straight. The whole Caps "mis"mgmt, from Bruce, to Ted, to George, are all apologists. I think they're making themselves look like a bunch of losers.
