Shero is King.

In other news, I watched some dumb Rob Rossi video on a link form the Pens' website, and realized something: Rob Rossi is always behind on his reporting. He seems like he's trapped in a parallel dimension that is three days behind the rest of the world. It's bizarre.

Also, what's up with the "the Red Wings getting their players back from injury is better than any trade they could make" hoopla? I can see a few areas on their roster where they can improve (cough cough between the pipes...)

I've noticed that, too, even though he only acquired:

2 more forwards, one of whom we destroyed in the ECF last year.

Their old defenseman, who has a sports hernia and sucked.

And another guy from Carolina, who, again, we ran circles around.

Jokes.

It sure didn't help them against the Canucks.

give him his due. the craps have needs. number one is someone(anyone) to play defense. two was another center. three was either adding a goaltender or losing jose theodore or both. mcphee got his center and added some grit to his 3rd & 4th lines - steckel with walker is a nice 4th line. defense... well, he got someone. which is better than he did in goal. so he addressed most of his team's on-ice needs with what was available & affordable. i still think it's like adding bigger, tougher, and more experienced screen doors to a submarine, but it's better than nothing. they obviously still plan on winning games by outscoring playoff opponents 9-6 every night. we'll see how that works for them.

As blasphemous as that PS is, it's quite amusing.

Perhaps Jesus will help with Ponikarovsky's work visa!

Go Pens!

What was it about rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic?

Meanwhile Sid stickhandles with George McPhee's balls.

@Eurydice. That gif doesn't do Sid justice, the rate of speed he was stickhandling that was unbelievable.

And secondly. I trust Shero, and of course you can never judge a trade deadline on the day of. McPhee can get hopped up for making 138912489275x24 moves, it won't mean jack if his team doesn't actually improve. Fans in DC with these moves are going to demand a cup or the heads of management.

I disagree. I believe Fitz earned himself a ticket to heaven to be used whenever just because of the talent.

My internet's being all wonky and pictures posted on the Pensblog rarely show up anymore. I feel like I really want to see this one.

In Shero We Trust.

Not a real exciting day on the trading front; no blockbuster deals or marquee players being traded. Almost a shame.

I have a bunch of friends who are bitching because Caputi left; I can't see how much he would benefit the Pens hanging out in WBS for the playoffs.

Yeah, he was an intriguing prospect, but I'm pretty sure the (probable...don't quote me if I'm wrong, guys) Cyrillic line of Feds - Geno - Poni will have far more of an effect in the next couple months than he will. And, fair play to the man...he'll be starting for the Leafs in the next game, so well done to him.

All in all, I'm happy with King Shero's moves today: a 2nd-round pick, a no-name defenseman (sorry, was never a huge Skoula fan) and a prospect for a Scuds-esque defenseman and a big, tough winger. Good day.

Go Pens.

I feel like the best comparison between the moves the Pens made and those the Caps made is as follows:

The Pens traded a high-end forward prospect, a 2nd round pick, and a depth defenseman on a salary dump in return for Alex Ponikarovsky AND Jordan Leopold.

The Caps traded a high-end forward prospect, a 2nd round pick, and a depth defenseman on a salary dump in return for Joe Corvo.

All other deals aside, my friends, that is the difference between Ray Shero and George McPhee.

Keep in mind that the trade deadline was split in half this year, with the previous "deadline" being before the olympics where you had Kovachoo, Phaneuf, Jokinen, etc. being moved.

As bummed as I was about Caputi being moved, I'm over it. From what I saw of him, he might be an AHL star (and I'm saying this of present-day Caputi), he did not have NHL speed or NHL size. A lot of his reviews said that he was knocked off the puck easily, which goes back to his lack of size. Even his lack of speed was something I noticed when he was skating with Wheeling. Could he have been coasting during his demotion? Very likely. But it was something that stuck out.

Caputi may develop, may put on 20 lbs, and one day might be hard to knock off the puck. I hope he does. I like seeing the players that the Pens drafted develop in the NHL, Carcillo being probably the only exception. But this trade is about now and not the future. If trading a high prospect away means possibly winning a Stanley Cup three months later, then I'm making that trade and never looking back.

+1 for great metaphorical thinking/speaking.

Tuesdays game was the second highest FSN rated Penguins game ever, only trailing Sir Buries It return. kuklaskorner.com/.../...

@Penstradeblog - I like the additions that Ray Shero made. I think Leopold will be an unspectacular yet steady defender. He has a decent enough two-way game that he can be paired up with a more offensive-minded guy or a defensive-minded guy and effectively be the yin to his partner's yang. And while I am not totally sold on Ponikarovsky, he should be an upgrade over what we've had on the 2nd line with Malkin. I admire Dupuis for putting up career numbers and being willing to play where ever he's asked to, but he isn't a legit top 6 forward. Ponikarovsky should be a better fit. And perhaps being out of Toronto will help him shake the rep of dogging it on occasion - or maybe just having a great play-making center will.

@Capstradeblog - The Caps didn't really address their biggest needs, but they addressed some needs. The addition of Joe Corvo will take some of the pressure and minutes off of Mike Green which, realistically speaking, is the best thing for the Caps. And Milan Jurcina, while inconsistent, is a step in the right direction to help the Caps on the blueline. Granted, Jurcina didn't help much last season, but he's a far more hard-nosed defender than anybody else they have short of John Erskine. Scott Walker & Eric Belanger may seem totally useless - and I'd agree for the most part - but it does add a little bit of grit and help with the PK. The issue for the Caps is that in order to get those guys into the lineup, they'll have to sit a couple of their more offensively inclined players.

Sure, the Caps should've looked at doing more to get tough on the blueline, cure their shaky goaltending, and add some protection for Ovechkin & Semin (who WILL be targeted by opposing teams in the wake of what happened in the Olympics against Canada), but George McPhee decided against doing that. I don't think the Caps moves were terrible, but I don't think they'll be as helpful to the Caps as many are saying.
