Number 1 thing Faceoff in Overtime, Sharks zone. All postseason long the Penguins have played short OT’s. This is a scary thought, because you feel like a double-ot classic is looming. Crosby wins the face-off. Letang’s not going to make a good first pass. He never does. As this season goes, we’re wrong. Conor Sheary […]
My God. If you weren’t already sweaty, just have a listen to the incomparable Mike Lange do his vignette for Game 2…
If you read the analysis of hockey pundits across North America leading up to the Stanley Cup final, you’d have walked away with the impression that the San Jose Sharks are all seven foot tall monsters. Words like power, heavy, and physicality were prevalent around the scouting report for the western conference champions. Those adjectives […]
Game 2: SHARKS (0-1) at PENGUINS (1-0) Stanley Cup Final 8:00 PM EST – NBC CONSOL Energy Center – Pittsburgh, PA The Pens stormed out of the gate and took command of Game 1 right from the start. After one period, shots were 15-4 and the scoreboard was 2-0. The Sharks are one of the […]
Check out this from the NHL PR Department: So in the NHL-era of Stanley Cup competition, Rust and Sheary are the only two rookies to open the scoring for a Stanley Cup Final. Somewhere* Dan Bylsma is rolling over in his grave**. *-Buffalo **-Buffalo
He had all of five goals in the regular season, but after his sixth goal of the postseason — a new Penguins playoff rookie record — we wondered aloud how the Sharks could slow down Bryan Rust. Patrick Marleau’s answer to this question was to drop a bionic elbow to the side of Rust’s head: […]
Pens 3 Sharks 2 Series: Pens lead 1-0. Goals Rust (6) from Schultz, Kunitz Sheary (3) from Crosby, Maatta Bonino (4) from Letang, Hagelin Penalties Cole (hooking) – Bad (loses Karlsson entering the Penguins zone and hooks across the front of his chest to pull him back) Malkin (slashing) – Inconsequential (gets into a shoving […]
Number one thing – The Game winner
The Paul Martin era in Pittsburgh was one that was conflicted. There are a lot of people that really liked him. There were a lot of people that hated him. And others were indifferent. Even on our blog, it was pretty split. But the one undeniable truth about the Paul Martin era was that it was riddled by baffling playoff performances.
Flash forward to Monday Night, May 30th. 2-2 game. Late third period. Paul Martin has played a stellar game. He actually blocked a shot with his body, he almost checked someone. But with less than four minutes to play, Paul Martin fell asleep:
Nick Bonino is just one of those guys that is simply always at the right place at the right time. Non-concussed Letang with a just disgusting pass. Right in Paul Martin’s mouth. Just glorious. This pic says it all:
Second biggest thing- Bryan Rust
Two part night for Bryan Rust.
- He fucking scored another goal. First of the game.
- He got murdered by Patrick Marleau
The Marleau hit is a strange one. It’s def a headshot, but slowed down it was more or less Marleau’s back that did the damage:
Not sure what to make of it.

Third – Matt Murray again
The biggest thing we’ll take away from these playoffs is Matt Murray’s ability to make the next save. There was a time, in the second period that this game was on the ropes. Matt Murray gave up two goals, but he didn’t give up that crippling third one. The nets just feels so much different with him in it.
Just note there will be a lot of PGH media members down playing what Murray is doing, because Marc-Andre Fleury is a good guy. But when you think about this run Murray’s top of the mountain.
Other things to remember
- Vintage Ben Lovejoy game. At fault for the game-tying goal. Massive bad penalty in the third period.
- Kris Letang’s pass to Nick Bonino should have a bridge named after it.
- Joe Thornton punched Evgeni Malkin in the head.
- Brent Burns is a psycho.
- Connor Sheary with his first goal since the Rangers series.
- One point for Crosby. Sneaky good game from him. Look at this pass he made to Hornqvist in the third period:
- Something about Crosby in this series that just feels like he is going to just go nuts.
- Still kind of think Martin Jones sucks, but whatever.
- Max Talbot was at the game, people cheered about it. He’ll be playing hockey in Russia next season so yea that’s where he is at.
Game 1: SHARKS at PENGUINS Stanley Cup Final 8:00 PM EST – NBC CONSOL Energy Center – Pittsburgh, PA At no point this season — certainly not any time before the month of March — did a Playoff Gameday post for the Stanley Cup Final seem fathomable. But here we are, a mere four wins […]
Jeremy Roenick went on the Fan Morning show for some reason and it turned emo real quick: “They have to listen to the context of the comments,” Roenick said. “By no means would I ever, ever, ever compare Jonathan Drouin to Sidney Crosby. I mean, you’ve got to be an idiot (to do that)…Mike [Milbury] […]
Through the first five games of the Eastern Conference final, the Tampa Bay stretch pass had given the Penguins complete fits. Although the Penguins controlled the majority of shot-attempts and scoring chances through those first five games, Tampa boasted an extremely gaudy shooting percentage, and their forwards had been sprung into the Penguins zone in […]
Pens 2 Lightning 1 Series: Pens win 4-3. Goals Rust (4) from Kunitz, Malkin Rust (5) from Lovejoy, Malkin Penalties Malkin (interference) – Unnecessary (knocks Palat down from behind a little too long after Palat plays the puck away) Cole (elbowing) – Inconsequential (elbows Paquette after a whistle and gets into a scrum with him, […]
Hey, thanks for stopping by again. Is it 2020? Or 2019? Did you get a Tesla. LOL. Are you looking for a trip down memory lane? Come on in. So the Internet’s still great, huh? Glad you stopped by. We still do the same. We go back and read posts during the 2008 and 2009 runs just […]
Feburary 18, 2016. The Penguins were – at some sportsbooks – 2000 to 1 to win the cup. At some, during the first month of the Sullivan era they were 2800 to 1: God almighty.
In “Armageddon,” Liv Tyler makes Bruce Willis promise that he will come back from his space mission to blow up an asteroid and save humanity. Five hours later, after Jerry Bruckheimer went through six orgasms, Bruce Willis had to explain to Liv Tyler via video conference that he would have to stay behind and blow […]
Honestly whenever you have a big meeting at work, or sex you should walk into the room with this song playing in your head, and exactly like Tom Barrasso walked here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=766gU3BY7mw “One from the heart,” the story of that season is by far the greatest Championship video ever made. The last part has […]
Pens 5 Lightning 2 Series: Tied at 3. Goals Kessel (9) (PP) from Crosby, Malkin Letang (2) from Sheary, Bonino Crosby (6) from Hornqvist Rust (3) from Kunitz, Maatta Bonino (3) (EN) from Lovejoy Penalties Malkin (slashing) – Stupid (gets slashed by Callahan and immediately retaliates with an even harder slash to Callahan for a […]
In Matt Murray’s first playoff start he walked into MSG and gave the Penguins the lead in what was a close series to that point. In round two he looked the President’s Trophy winning Capitals and the eye and pooped in their face. He then was benched, stunningly, after one game where the goals against […]
Game 6: PENGUINS (2-3) AT LIGHTNING (3-2) Eastern Conference Final 8:00 PM EST – NBCSN Amalie Arena – Tampa Florida If you’re watching the Penguins in a vacuum, then you may be saying to yourself, “If the Penguins lose tonight it will be their 7th defeat versus a lower seed since 2009.”
Back in the old Blogspot days, when blogging was fun. We had a post about how Ken Wregget was jobbed out of a chance to play in the 1996 Eastern Conference Finals. 20 years late (my god) could the same thing be happening? Here is that post: But 1995-96 was the year that changed people’s […]
Lightning 4 Pens 3 (OT) Series: Lightning lead series 3-2. Goals Dumoulin (1) from Rust, Kunitz Hornqvist (7) from Hagelin, Maatta Kunitz (4) from Malkin Penalties Malkin (unsportsmanlike conduct) – Inconsequential (gets slashed by Carle and then engages with him in the offensive zone to force a whistle as both players get sent to the […]
Mike Sullivan has made all the right moves. Every which way. Until Sunday night. 1. He played Marc-Andre Fleury. Even though Matt Murray had almost little to no fault in Game 4. 2. He rode with the lifeless Beau Bennett for some unknown reason. This wasn’t the Mike Sullivan we’ve seen for the last four months. […]
Game 5: LIGHTNING (2-2) at PENGUINS (2-2) Eastern Conference Final 8:00 PM EST – NBCSN CONSOL Energy Center – Pittsburgh, PA The Lightning needed a quick start in Game 4. A large portion of their gameplan was counting on the Penguins to beat themselves at some point –they needed that to start showing some dividends. […]
