Boston Bruins (35-22-10) at Pittsburgh Penguins (39-18-10) 1:00 PM – ROOT Sports, NHLN CONSOL Energy Center, Pittsburgh, PA
This was really bad. This was like that scene in an action movie where the villain runs away and his henchmen stay behind and fight Steven Seagal. The villain in this case is that coward Tyler Dellows, and the henchmen is the shell of an NHL team known as the Edmonton Oilers. It’s simply unheard […]

Before the season began, we took a historical look at some extended goaltending metrics for Marc-Andre Fleury. We created an imaginary league average goaltender and bumped Fleury’s numbers against his. This created a direct comparison between Fleury and our imaginary league-average goaltender. The Penguins deserved to win this game. But, they didn’t. There is no other way to look at it. In the third period, the Penguins came in waves. Shift after shift. The Penguins first and second lines threw everything they had at the Sharks. It was easily one of the best games anyone has seen […]
Early in the second period Marc-Andre Fleury robbed the Sharks Tomas Hertl. What makes this save so remarkable is that Fleury was looking over his left shoulder, as the pass came over his right. He adjusted in time, and snapped his glove shut: Really makes a tough save look easy.

This a column by Mike Colligan that appears every Monday morning on The Pensblog. You can find more of Mike’s work at his site, ColliganHockey.com. (1) What should we make of the Ben Lovejoy trade? The Pittsburgh Penguins don’t match up well against big, physical teams. Don’t let their Saturday night (Sunday morning) overtime victory […]
How do you want to look at this game a night after the Pens dismantled one of the best teams in the NHL? Was it the Pens hanging with a perennial Cup contender? Is it proof that Jim Rutherford has made all the right moves in preparation for the stretch run through March and into […]
We’re giving Fleury all of the stars in this game. Case closed. Save after save after save…and that was just the first period. Then the third period came along, and he stole the show. Nothing not to like from this game, other than the weird power play. More stuff in the A.M.
