Kessel’s Playoff Run Is The Ultimate Narrative Killer

There’s nothing I love more than a good redemption story in sports. The legends of athletes, maligned by fans and media, serving up a heaping, warm plate of crow to their detractors, putting the final shovel of dirt on baseless narratives and criticisms of their character. Boy, do we ever have one of those stories in Pittsburgh […]

Years and years from now, no matter what happens from here on out, you won’t remember Game 4 in San Jose. What You’ll Remember: Game 3. The one that got away.

This game was the thinnest of the lines. If the Penguins score the second goal of the game to make it 2-0, the Cup is probably in the building Monday night.

Neither team was overwhelming good or bad in this game, but the Sharks made the last good play, and the Penguins the last bad mistake. It doesn’t take much, but that’s what it is so you have to deal.

Number one thing to remember

In the third period the Penguins opened perfectly. The Sharks looked scared. But everything changed when Joe Thornton got hit in the face by a Nick Bonino high stick. The Sharks got a four minute penalty, which was questionable by the way It was Matt Murray’s moment. Murray was really good to that point. We thought he might have put his name on the Conn Smythe trophy in the second period. But one goal changed that. The Penguins literally killed all of the penalty, but just as time was expiring on that penalty Joel Ward wired one past Murray.

in Game Three of the 2016 NHL Stanley Cup Final at SAP Center on June 4, 2016 in San Jose, Joel Ward acts like he’s never scored a goal in his life

Just as Crosby and Letang had drawn up the OT winner in Game 2, they drew up the Penguins demise in Game 3.

The whole play started with Crosby trying to force a pass to Letang. The Sharks picked it off, went the other way

66, your thoughts:

2016-06-05 00_53_41

That’s a classic rich person’s “fuck off.”

First really soft goal we’ve seen Murray give up.

The whole play changed the game. People could pretend Joe Thornton was good again, and the Penguins were staggered. Thankfully, Martin Jones sucks, so the Penguins had plenty of chances to win the game, they just couldn’t convert.

Overtime

There was no way this was ending early. It felt like it could be a long one. The Penguins had a ton of chances. Nick Bonino had a rebound go wide. By the way has Martin Jones made a save all series where there wasn’t a huge rebound?

OT’s pace was fast. Joonas Jobbernskoi was the Sharks best player in Game 3. He won it:

2016-06-05 01_05_31

There is that thin line. Malkin lost sight of the puck for a split second. That split second let Jobbernskoi get a step on him. Amazing way to get the shot off really. Almost equal to a fall away jumper. Probably one Murray would like back, but it’s really just a better play by Jobbernskoi.

Other shit

  • Ben Lovejoy’s night was nothing short of improbable. A goal, and an assist. It will get lost in history, but man.
  • Penguins couldn’t get more than one powerplay in Game 3. Sharks got away with a ton of shit.
  • Martin Jones kind of sucks, so yea.
  • Penguins fourth line had some really great moments, and some really scary moments. Game was so even.
  • Penguins have scored 11 goals in the last minute of periods this playoff season. (H/T to Bob Grove)

What you’ll remember: Game 1. Eat Shit, Paul Martin.

Number one thing – The Game winner

The Paul Martin era in Pittsburgh was one that was conflicted. There are a lot of people that really liked him. There were a lot of people that hated him. And others were indifferent. Even on our blog, it was pretty split. But the one undeniable truth about the Paul Martin era was that it was riddled by baffling playoff  performances.

Flash forward to Monday Night, May 30th. 2-2 game. Late third period. Paul Martin has played a stellar game. He actually blocked a shot with his body, he almost checked someone. But with less than four minutes to play, Paul Martin fell asleep:

Nick Bonino is just one of those guys that is simply always at the right place at the right time. Non-concussed Letang with a just disgusting pass. Right in Paul Martin’s mouth. Just glorious. This pic says it all:

Second biggest thing- Bryan Rust

Two part night for Bryan Rust.

  1. He fucking scored another goal. First of the game.
  2. He got murdered by Patrick Marleau

The Marleau hit is a strange one. It’s def a headshot, but slowed down it was more or less Marleau’s back that did the damage:

Not sure what to make of it.

Third – Matt Murray again

in Game One of the 2016 NHL Stanley Cup Final at Consol Energy Center on May 30, 2016 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

in Game One of the 2016 NHL Stanley Cup Final at Consol Energy Center on May 30, 2016 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The biggest thing we’ll take away from these playoffs is Matt Murray’s ability to make the next save. There was a time, in the second period that this game was on the ropes. Matt Murray gave up two goals, but he didn’t give up that crippling third one. The nets just feels so much different with him in it.

Just note there will be a lot of PGH media members down playing what Murray is doing, because Marc-Andre Fleury is a good guy. But when you think about this run Murray’s top of the mountain.

Other things to remember

  • Vintage Ben Lovejoy game. At fault for the game-tying goal. Massive bad penalty in the third period.
  • Kris Letang’s pass to Nick Bonino should have a bridge named after it.
  • Joe Thornton punched Evgeni Malkin in the head.
  • Brent Burns is a psycho.
  • Connor Sheary with his first goal since the Rangers series.
  • One point for Crosby. Sneaky good game from him. Look at this pass he made to Hornqvist in the third period:

2016-05-31 00_33_46

  • Something about Crosby in this series that just feels like he is going to just go nuts.
  • Still kind of think Martin Jones sucks, but whatever.
  • Max Talbot was at the game, people cheered about it. He’ll be playing hockey in Russia next season so yea that’s where he is at.
