The Hurricanes are still paying Jussi Jokinen around $900,000. So when GM Jim Rutherford opens up his bank statment, he is going to vomit uncontrollably. This is basically like enduring a breakup and then having to pay for your ex to go out on unlimited dates, and you have to sit there and watch all of them.
The Penguins are basically doing whatever they want to their opponents right now. Mind you, they haven't played any of the big boys yet, but you can see the change. The defense is worlds better than last season. Hell, Carolina even had this game tied in the third, and it still felt like the Pens were going to roll.
Jussi Jokinen was definitely the story in this one, though.
Did you see him?
Cam Ward sure did.
Nice graphic from ROOT on the new cages.
The Canes were getting run out of the building early. Jokinen almost put one in on the first rush of the game. Foreshadowing city.
The game pretty much settled down into what the two first Pens games looked like: the defense keeping everything to the outside and MAF being asked to make the routine saves.
Eventually, the Pens got a power play as a result of Vitale being a pain in the ass.
The Pens cashed in almost immediately. Crosby with a dish to Jokinen. Some nice footwork:
A whole bunch of shit happened in the rest of the first.
In no particular order:
1. Tanner Glass got tripped, and the Pens got a power play.
2. Tanner Glass fought Harrison, who was the one tripped Glass earlier, so he basically had one of the worst periods of his career.
3. Dupes had a disallowed goal somewhere.
Pens opened up strong, and Captain America, Paul Martin, got a goal.
2-0. Confidence Index registers for the first time this season.
Again, the game was going like it was from the outset. But the Canes were able to squeak one past MAF on a great deflection from Eric Staal. 2-1.
The goal woke up the Canes big-time. Their uniforms were still pissing us off. They remind us too much of the Capitals and the Habs.
Tanner Glass was still out of control.
Good period of hockey.
Nathan Gerbe was able to shit one past MAF to tie the game up. Holy shit. 2-2.
The crowd was dead, but Malkin and Jokinen brought everyone back to life. What a sick pass from Malkin, and then Jokinen was able to snipe a semi-screened Cam Ward. 3-2.
The second line got so many chances all night.
Stick tap to Maatta for his first career NHL point on the goal.
The best stretch of the young season came a couple minutes later when Cam Ward turned into the younger Cam Ward with save after save. Unbelievable.
The faceoff after the great saves by Ward, Tanner Glass scores. Tanner Glass may have been drinking all last season and sobered up over the summer because he’s been pretty noticeable in all three games so far. He continued his miracle run by putting home this unreal backhand:
The Pens got a power play, and Jokinen put the final nail in the coffin:
- Maatta still looking strong. He just never misses the net, either.
- Kirk Muller was pissed about any and all Jokinen questions in the post-game.
- Post-Gazette has some new game tracker thing. Pretty sharp. Go check it out.
