Pittsburgh Penguins Gameday 23 – Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning (9-11-1) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (14-8-0)

ROOT, NBCSN, TSN2, RDS2 – 7:30 pm/et

Consol Energy Center – Pittsburgh, PA

Malkin's back. Boychuk's on waivers. Bennett was sent back to WBS, but possibly only temporarily.

Rabble rabble rabble.

Stamkos vs. Crosby. Expect to hear that frequently.

Season Series: 1-0-0

Last meeting that counted: February 24, 2013. Penguins won 5-3.

What we said in our recap:

Since Malkin and Crosby have been on the Pens' roster, it's usually fallen on Malkin to carry the load when Crosby has been sidelined. The script has been flipped for the time being, and it's Crosby's turn to carry the load without Malkin, who has been diagnosed with a concussion. With the pressure firmly on 87's back, he has to bring it to another level. It's nausating to credit Crosby for anything because he is just too good, but there is no better player in the NHL right now.

Know Your Enemy: Raw Charge

What they're saying:

While we make jokes commonly about Pierre McGuire needing to shut up with his über man crush on Sidney Crosby, his (and the NBC Sports Net crew) will likely be aimed at a different Pittsburgh Penguin this evening when the Lightning and the Penguins face off for the second time in a week in prime-time.

While I have no doubt the studio and broadcast crew will heap praise and revelry upon Cosby and the infallible Penguins in general at any chance they get, the limelight should be shown brightest on Evgeni Malkin tonight.

With 4 goals and 17 assists in 18 games, Malkin returning is very much something to promote… But so is the notion concussions are an issue in the NHL, the fact the Penguins have mismanaged a star returning from concussion before would also be a narrative, roster players on both teams who have suffered head injuries in their career, etc…

It's funny how fans of every franchise think Pierre McGuire is biased towards their opponent….
