In some dark reality, Mario Lemieux could have played for the Islanders

If you didn't watch the 30 for 30 on John Spano, this may not be in the correct context. But if you did this is somewhat horrifying.

Via @sean_leahy, look at this old New York Times Article. It is talking about the rise of Spano, and how good things could be for the Isles:

But do not be surprised — and there have been hints that this is the direction the Islanders will pursue — if Spano tries to lure his old friend Mario Lemieux out of his impending retirement, even though Lemieux still has a one-year, $11 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It is public knowledge that Spano scammed 66 out of about a million-dollars. So there was some type of relationship there.

Overall, the Spano story is maybe one of the most insane stories we've ever seen. And the chilling part is how close he came to making it all work. Could that have led to Mario playing for the Isles? Probably not, but holy crap.
